Romeo and Juliet Essay

     How hard would it be to have the only person you love in the whole world be part of an enemy family? The story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two people who fall in love but have many complications in loving each other. The biggest problem of all is the fact that they come from enemy families, Juliet being a capulet and Romeo being a Montague. Other complications include the fact that Juliet is set to marry another man, Paris, very shortly. Friar Lawerence (Romeos father) and Lord Capulet (Juliets father) contribute to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by forcing them to act quickly and unorganizedly through their love.
     Lord Capulet contributes to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by forcing Juliet to get married to Paris causing Juliet to rush through her love with Romeo; "'Marry my child early next thursday morn the gallant young and noble gentleman the County Paris at Saint Peter's church shall happily make thee there a joyful bride.' 'Now by Saint Peter's church and Peter too he shall not make me there a joyful bride! I wonder at this haste that i must wed ere he that should be husband comes to woo I pray you tell my lord father madam i will not marry yet and when i do swear it shall be Romeo whom you know i hate rather then Paris. These are news indeed!' 'Here comes your father. tell him yourself and see how he will take it at your hands'" act 3 scene 5 page 165. This quote explains when Juliet is told she will be marrying Paris in a couple of days. The date of the wedding forces Juliet to panic on how little time she has to plan an escape with Romeo. This quote also explains how much Juliet hates Paris and does not wish to marry him. Juliets father contributes to the tragedy by constricting the time that Juliet and Romeo have together.
     Friar Lawerence contributes to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by not making his plans clear to Romeo causing Romeo to believe that Juliet is truly dead. "Hold then go home be merry give consent to marry Paris wednesday is tomorrow tomorrow night look that thou lie alone let not the nurse lie with thee in thy chamber take thou this vial being in bed and this distilling liquor drink thou off when presently through all thy veins shall run a cold and drowsy humor for no pulse shall keep but his native progress but surcrease no warmth no breath shall testify thou livest the roses in thy lips shall fade to paly ashes thy eyes windows fall like death when he shuts up the day of life each part deprived of supple government shall stiff stark and cold appear like death and in this borrowed likeness of shrunk death thou shalt continue two and forty hours and then awake as if from a pleasant sleep now when the bridgegroom of the morning comes to rouse thee from thy bed there art thou dead then as the manner of our country is in thy best robes uncovered in bier thou shalt be borne to that some ancient vault where all kindred of the Capulets lie in the meantime against thou shalt awake shall Romeo by my letters know our drift and hither shall he come and he and i will watch thy waking and that very night shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua And this shall free thee from this present shame if no inconstant toy nor womanish fear abate thy valor in the acting it." act 4 scene 1 page 183-184. This quote explains Friars's plan to get Romeo and Juliet back together. When they do carry out this plan though word doesnt reach Romeo so he thinks Juliet is truly dead. They should have kept the wedding on thursday so they would have more time to tell Romeo the plan. Friar Lawerence contributes to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by not planning out carefully.
     Both families (Capulets and Montagues) hate each other so Romeo and Juliet had to love secretly making it harder. "Two households both alike in dignity in fair Verona where we lay our scene from ancient grudge break to new mutiny where civil blood makes civil hands unclean from forth these fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star crossed lovers take their life whose misadventure piteous overthrows doth with their death bury their parents strife the fearful passage of their death marked love and the continuance of their parents rage which but their childrens end naught could remove is now the two hours traffic set of our stage the which if you with patient ears attend what here shall miss our toil shall strive to mend" prologue page 7. The prologue shows how the families are alike but how their ancient enemies so if they found out that Romeo and Juliet were in love a bigger fight between the families would occur making it harder for them to love each other.
     Romeo and Juliet relates to the world because of this overall theme of love and the many complications that are also involved.

The Lying Game

     The Lying Game by Sara Shepard is about these twins that were kept a secret from one another. It all started when Emma, who was the twin that was never adopted, got in trouble with her foster care mother. Travis, who also lived in the foster home with her, showed the foster mother a video of someone being fake murdered. The girl being murdered looked exactly like Emma, bit she knew it wasn't her because she doesn't ever remember doing that. Emma digs deep into this girls history through facebook and finds that her name is Sutton Mercer and found that they had the same birthday. What i wonder is why the family that adopted Sutton not want Emma as well? Why were Sutton and Emma kept a secret from one another?

      You would think that maybe the family that adopted Sutton couldn't afford another child or something but they were rich so they could've taken Emma too or at least let each other know that they have  a twin sister, right? why didn't they also take Emma? Did they not know about her or did they just not want her? And it keeps saying that Sutton is dead........ I'm so confused.....

Romeo and Juliet

     "These violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die like fire and powder"
                                                                                       - Romeo and Juliet 2.6.9

     I think this quote basically sums up Romeo and Juliet because Romeo and Juliet are in love which would be the delight part of the quote but then its says that the delights have violent ends which is true because they both die in the end along with a few others.  The quote relates Romeo and Juliet's tragedy a dying fire. A fire is normally its brightest right before it goes out and thats basically what its saying when it says "in their triumph die".

     Romeo and Juliet is basically about to young people who "fall in love" with each other. I don't think their love is really genuine though because Juliet is like thirteen and I'm guessing Romeo's around that and when you are young like that you're really reckless and don't know anything about who you love you just have crushes. They don't even really know anything about each other either because they haven't really talked about their personalities with each other just how much they love each other. Love at first sight is just not true.

Go Ask Alice

     I recently started reading Go Ask Alice by anonymous. The book is about a fifteen year old girl who becomes addicted to a drug called LSD. First her life starts out as she claims miserable but when she finally heres the news that her family is moving she feels like its a way for her to kind of start her life over. When she said start her life over she meant in a good way but her new life starts out pretty bad. After moving in to her new home she meets some new friends at school where they invite her to a party. At the party everyone played this game where everyone took a coke and inside one of them was LSD but no one nows which cup it is. Of course the main character of the book gets the cup with the LSD.
     So far from reading this book I have learned that drugs are bad for you which I already know. The main character of the book seems like a pretty good girl who probably, if offered, wouldn't do drugs. She ended up getting addicted to drugs because someone poured her a cup of coke which had LSD in it and that showed me that I should be careful especially at parties and pour my own drink. I think this book is doing the opposite of promoting teen use of drugs because it really shows how a teens life is after she gets addicted, when she's on drugs, and when she is away from drugs for too long.

           "We are the same people only further from home on freeways fifty lanes wide on a concrete continent spaced with bland billboards illustrating imbecile illusions of happiness."
                                  - A Coney Island of the Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

     While reading A Coney Island of the Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti I came across this quote. I think this quote is basically his idea of what America really is and I completely agree. Billboards in a America are like he says illustrating false happiness. Usually on a billboard you would find like an advertisement for a company or product and the companies manufacturing these products make you believe that you really need this product but when you buy the product you realize that it really isn't anything special. I also liked the way he said "concrete continent" because really when you think about it America really is just a highway that stretches on forever and is "fifty lanes wide", our government even had to put laws in place to protect at least a little chunk of the nature land and forrest because we were eliminating forrest space to either build houses or roads. "We are the same people only further away from home" probably is talking about the immigrations over the years first starting with Columbus discovering America. All in all I feel from this quote that America has a mask that shows visions of happiness but really its' nothing special.

A New Dawn

     I am not one to let someone hate on Twilight by Stephenie Meyer but I decided to read a book of essays called A New Dawn where many authors share their thoughts on The Twilight Saga.
     The most offensive chapter to me (being on team Edward) was the first one titled A Very Dangerous Boy by Susan Vaught. Before reading this chapter I never really thought of Edward Cullen a Sociopath. Apparently there are seven traits of being a sociopath. Edward fits six of those characteristics. The first characteristic is simple "Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest" (A New Dawn). It never really occurred to me while reading Twilight how unlawful Edward was until I read this book. As described in the book Edward first of all drives super super fast and definitely goes way above the speed limit but the more unlawful act is basically breaking into Bella's home and watching her while she sleeps which would be categorized as both stalking and a break in if Bella had reported it to the police. Along with that first characteristic, he fits into 2) using aliases for personal profit or pleasure 3) lack of planning ahead 4) Aggressiveness 5)Disregard of safety 6) consistent irresponsibility. The only category Edward doesn't fit in is lack of remorse (Edward is probably the most remorseful character I have read about in a book).
     The other thing I realized while reading this book that I didn't realize while reading Twilight was how typical Twilight really is. Twilight is basically about a teen romance but to throw in some drama Edward is a vampire. To make it more interesting there is a love triangle with Jacob who also happens to be an inhuman creature or a werewolf. Twilight as mentioned in A New Dawn basically is like Romeo and Juliet which was ironically quoted in the beginning of a Twilight saga book and was actually a required read in the story of Twilight. A story so typical yet so unique.
    

Michelle Obama's Influence on Fashion

     Michelle Obama has a huge influence on new fashion trends. The article "Michelle Obama Influences the Fashion Industry" describes that news reporters and just the general public all wait for big events and just normal days to see what Michelle Obama will wear. The public see what she wears and then go out and buy similar clothing. Michelle Obama really has the power to decide who can become the next great designer and also what will trend next, but why?
     Michelle Obama chooses what will trend next and creates more famous designers. Michelle Obama uses lesser known designers according to the article and after she is shown wearing that designer everyone has to have clothes from that designer then everyone knows that designer. In one year alone Obama "raised over 2.7 billion dollars in revenue for 29 different fashion designers just because she wore their clothing and the masses went out and bought similar clothing that Obama wore. Some fashion companies saw their stock rise over 25% during that same period," (1). Obama has power in the fashion industry.
     Why is it that famous people are always the influences? In my opinion I think it's not so great that famous people are influencing the world. Sure it's great because it helps out the fashion industries of lesser known designers as well as other industries but if everyone owns the same pair of shoes or the same dress then it's not original. The first thing people can tell about your personality is by looking at what you wear. The things you wear should be not only things you like and think look pretty but should also reflect who you are as a person. People buy the clothing that famous people wear because they wear them not because it reflects them. "Obama’s fashion choices are chronicled almost on a daily basis as many within the industry and the media wait to see what she will wear next whether it’s for a huge event or just daily wear," (1), people live for this just to see what a famous person will where to this big event or to this place.
     After reading this article I have realized how big an impact Michelle Obama was to the world but it's not only her that has a big impact on the world. Almost all people who have been recognized for something like they were in a movie, there a singer, or they are like in this case married to the president have influences on well everything we do not just fashion. All this influencing just sucks a lot of the originality out of our fashion choices and everywhere we go.

Twilight

     I have recently been reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The book is about a girl named Bella who moves to a town in Washington where her father already lives from her mother's house in Phoenix, Arizona. It's a big change for her because she doesn't know anybody at her new school and also because she isn't used to much rain and cold weather since she is coming from one of the warmest and driest places in the US. She meets new friends at her school but one person mystifies her. She can't seem to figure Edward Cullen out. This book is about her realizing that vampires and werewolves really do exist, not only in books but in her life. It is also about choosing. But who has the power?
     Bella has power in the story. I think that Bella has some power in the story because she has to choose who she will date. Bella loves both people Jacob and Edward but in different ways, Jacob is more of a family friend and Edward she loves more as a boyfriend. Both love her in a sort of girlfriend way so it is her choice to pick who she will date.
      Jacob and Edward have the power in the story. I think that both Edward and Jacob have the power in the story. Their power is mostly physical, they are physically powerful and strong while as Bella is mentally strong. Both want Bella and so they aren't very fond of each other. Also the werewolves and the vampires are natural enemies so it makes things worse. But they also have things in common like their strength and also their job to protect Bella, a mortal with no strength and no way of protecting herself from other immortal beings like werewolves and vampires.
     All in all multiple characters have power in different ways whether it be physical or mental in this book.
